Ruimsig Solar Project
Back To Projects
Provision of basic energy to fifty (50) households in Ruimsig, Johannesburg.
Location: Ruimsig, Gauteng, South AfricaThe installation of fifty (50) solar home systems (SHS) in Ruimsig. These SHS will provide basic lighting (2 lights per household), a 15 inch LED TV, cell phone charging , listen to the radio or utilize any appliance that has a low power usage including DSTV and a laptop.
Scale:This project is part of a larger pilot project, jointly run by Ikhayalami and Energy One, which targets one thousand households (1,000) in Ruimsig.
Impact:The project has already had significant impact on the lives of the households which have been fitted with the solar home systems (SHS). The construction of a solar hub in the area has provided additional benefits to the community as help is close by should they have any questions and/or problems with their system.

Project in depth
Detailed Information
This project was initiated in June 2015 by the Federation of the Urban Poor (FEDUP) and the Informal Settlements Network (ISN) with the support of Ikhayalami, CORC and uTshani Fund. Through the project, households are being fitted with Solar Home Systems (SHS) to meet their basic energy demands. These systems provide basic lighting (2 lights per household), a TV, cell phone charging as well to power a radio. Community members trained as hub operators and technicians are, with support, ultimately responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the systems.
The intention was to install fifty (50) solar home systems (SHS). This number has been exceeded, with seventy-five (75) SHS having been installed in Ruimsig.
Scale:The intention is to scale the project up at settlement level, providing access to affordable renewable energy to the Ruimsig residents to meet their basic energy needs.
Impact:The projects impact will be seen, firstly, in the increase in the number of households with access to basic energy. It will also be evidenced in decreased expenditure on electricity in each household.
