Community Urban Planning Studio in KampalaBack To Projects
This project encompassed the participation in an urban studio by Makerere University students and the Federation. The students assisted the Federation with enumeration data and report publication. Data disaggregation and analysis was completed for all secondary cities during this project, namely Jinja, Arua, Mbale, Kabale and Mbarara. Enumeration reports were also generated which are to be submitted to the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development's (MLHUD) Department of Physical Planning when necessary. This demonstrates the community's capacity to engage in slum upgrading initiatives. The partnership between the Makerere University students and Federation was strengthened throughout the process. Engagement with the students gave the Federation access to planning models and helped increase understanding of the value of community data. The community also gained new skills in organizing and analyzing their data. An assortment of lectures, interviews and focus groups meant that the students gained an understanding of the importance of involving community members in slum upgrading initiatives.
Both parties are interested in taking the partnership further which bodes well for the scaling up of the project (potentially to an international level by including the Association of African Planning Schools) and for it to become an ongoing exercise. Additionally, the involvement of architecture students in future tudio work is being considered. Challenges to the project and scaling up prospects in general include limited access to technology and the large number of students per class (approximately one hundred) in the Urban Planning program.Location: Kampala, Uganda

The community's data anlaysis and presentation (i.e. report writing) skills were improved through their participation in this studio. The community's understanding of the planning processes and systems as well as how they could participate and influence those processes was also increased. However, capacity building was not a one way process. The students who also took part in the studio gained a greater understanding of the importance of involving communities in the planning process.Scale:
The partnership between the National Slum Dwellers Federation of Uganda (NSDFU) and Makerere University has the potenital to be scaled up to a larger, ongoing exercise. Both parties are interested in pursuing this partnership further. Makerere students can continue to assist the Federation in analyzing its enumeration data and compiling it into reports. The idea of even bringing in architecture students for larger projects is being looked into. Partnerships between universities and communties can be scaled up to the international level by including Association of African Planning Schools, which has a collaboration agreement with SDI, in these exchanges.Impact:
This project seeks to bridge the knowledge and technical skills gap between planning students and community. Student planners were able to learn from community members the challenges faced on the ground, and community realized the knowledge and capacity they can bring to the urban development agenda. Not so much does it aim at changing policy, but rather seeks to set the precedent of how community and the University can develop partnerships and work toegether to improve conditions in informal settlements. Through lectures, interviews, and focus groups the next generation of planners understands the importance of involving communities in slum upgrading iniaitives.Finance: SDI Contributions:

Knowledge sharing achieved through the disaggregation and analysis of enumeration data as well as the compilation of reports for submission to the relevant Municipal offices as necessary was the key aim of this studio.Community capacity:
Community capacity in relation to data analysis and report writing was improved through participation in the studio. The community also learnt the true value of the community enumeration data they possessed not only for projects they initiated but also for the Municipality. The broader community, through the students, was also capacitated by the greater understanding of the need for community members to participate in planning and implementation of (infrastructure) projects.Scale:
The project can be scaled both nationally and internationally with the inclusion of the AAPS, which the SDI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with.Impact:
The project's impact is far reaching as Federation members will, through exchanges, share the new skills they learnt during the studios with other Federation members - local and international. The students will also utilise the knowledge they gained through their participation in the studio when they start practising professionally in different parts of the country, and for some in different parts of the world. Consequently, the manner in which planning is undertaken - both at a policy and practical level - will shift somewhat as the students begin to apply what they have learnt.Finance: SDI Contributions:

This studio has leveraged supported from Cities Alliance and UN-HABITAT GLTN for future studios. The Alliance has begun sourcing funds beyond SDI in order to ensure financial sustainability of this and similar projects.
